It was the talk of the town in the Olympic village this summer and had people all around the world Googling ‘what are those odd marks on Michael Phelps’ body?’ For once, it wasn’t the usual haul of gold medals around the swimmer’s neck but large spherical shapes ‘tattooed’ across his torso in domino-like fashion. The reason? Hijama therapy (or ‘cupping’ for short). Amara Deen, from Dewsbury, is one of the few local therapists carrying out the ancient art of hijama in Yorkshire. She first experienced the treatment herself a few years ago. After studying at the ‘The Hijama Clinic’ based in Luton, she set up her own business from home and currently caters for people of all ages and backgrounds under the company name – ‘The Perfect Hijama Clinic’. Hijama therapy is a natural holistic treatment which sees blood extracted from the body, between the skin and muscle tissue. The therapist places special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction, which many customers have said is ‘extremely relaxing’. Wet cupping – where blood is drawn out of the body – is the more effective treatment, yet many athletes opt for the dry cupping option which […]

Mullaco Dewsbury was opened in 1981 at Savile Town, Dewsbury and was amongst the first in the area to offer fresh fruit, vegetables and Halal meat. In 2004, this shop was extended and refurbished by acquiring two neighbouring shops to make it into a mini-market. Within two years of this extension, business had grown so rapidly to the extent that a bigger and newer place was needed to fulfil the needs of our customers. Premises at nearby Thornhill Lees were identified. They were originally one of ASDA’s first supermarkets and the site is within a mile of our existing shop. The 10,000 sq ft unit was completely refurbished to very high modern standards. The supermarket includes all the usual departments along with a car park to accommodate over 100 cars. Today, we can proudly say that we offer fresh fruit and vegetables, Halal meat and poultry, spices and a wide range of traditional Asian and continental foods. We have customers coming from all over Yorkshire, Lancashire and various other parts of the country.

The Old Trafford area of Manchester was inhabited by a small Sunni Muslim community in the early mid 70’s. In 1977, the Old Trafford Muslim Society was established to cater for the religious and general welfare needs of the local Muslim Community. To achieve this, a redundant Co-Op Shop situated at the corner of Stamford Street & St Brides Street was bought through donations made by local Muslims and various Muslim families living throughout the UK. This shop was converted to serve as a Masjid and was called Masjid-E-Noor. The conversion cost was taken on by the Muslims living in the area. The prayer hall accommodated for a hundred Mussalli’s (worshippers) and was sufficient at that time. Over time, there was a vast increase of Muslims moving to the area mainly from South Asia, but also from the Middle East, Indonesia and Malaysia as well as many other Countries from the East. In order to continue serving the needs of the local Muslims, larger premises were sought for some time but there were no existing facilities suitable for conversion within the area. Alhamdulillah (All praise be to Allah), an opportunity then arose allowing Old Trafford Muslim Society to purchase a […]
